KENILWORTH WRESTLER EXCELS OVER SUMMER
Jesse Boyden, a wrestler on the Brearley Bruins Middle School team, kept busy over the summer by competing around the country. Wrestling Heavyweight, Jesse took First at the NJ Schoolboy States in Freestyle & Greco, First at the Northeast Regionals (Bloomsburg, PA) in Freestyle, Greco & Scholastic, Third at the Schoolboy Nationals (Oklahoma) in Greco and Sixth in Freestyle. Boyden also qualified for Team NJ Schoolboy Team and attended the Indiana Schoolboy National Duals.

KENILWORTH'S OWN WRESTLERS EXCEL AT FATHER'S DAY TOURNAMENT
Kenilworth's first annual Father's Day Tournament was held on June 14, 2003. This K-12th grade scholastic tournament was extremely successful, as were many of Kenilworth's own wrestlers. 13 wrestlers from Kenilworth were awarded medals for placing in the top 3 of their divisions, with 3 wrestlers actually winning their divisions. KENILWORTH FATHER'S DAY WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Kenilworth Wrestling is sponsoring a Wrestling Tournament to be held on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at David Brearley HS Gym in Kenilworth. It is a double elimination tournament of Scholastic Wrestling using Madison Weight Classes. Weigh-in / Registration is the morning of the tournament from 7-8 a.m. and wrestling will start 9-9:30 a.m. The 3 divisions are K-5th, 6-8th and 9-12th. Entry fee is $20 per division. K-TOWN SPRING / SUMMER WRESTLING PROGRAM SIGN-UP
K-Town Wrestling Club will be holding the sign-up for the Spring / Summer Wrestling Program on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 from 3:30-5:30 pm, in the David Brearley High School Wrestling Room. All interested wrestlers who are seriously looking to improve their wrestling skills must sign up at this time - there will be no other sign-ups held. The cost is $100 per wrestler and a 2003 USA Wrestling Card is required, but will be available for an additional $25 at sign-up. Practices will begin on Monday, May 12 and will end on Friday, July 18, 2003. The practice days for Middle and High School wrestlers are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:30-5:30 pm. The practices for K-5th Grade wrestlers are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00 pm.


 KENILWORTH PLACES 7 WRESTLERS AT NJ KIDS STATE TOURNAMENT
Of Kenilworth's 23 wrestlers who qualified for the 2003 NJ Kids State Wrestling Tournament, 7 went on to become placewinners. The State Tournament took place March 22-23 (Union HS) and March 29-30 (Lakewood HS). The top 8 wrestlers in New Jersey for each age division / weight class received medals.

6 Kenilworth Wrestlers Assist with CJL Win Over NWJL (48-37)
Six Kenilworth wrestlers participated in the first meeting of the Central (CJL) and Northwest (NWJL) Jersey League Champions in Delaware Valley on Wednesday, March 26, 2003. Kenilworth is a member of the Central Jersey League, who won the match 48-37. Only wrestlers taking first place in their weight class during either the CJL or NWJL's annual tournament were eligible to participate.

Kenilworth Wrestling's 2003 K-8 Awards Dinner
The annual Kenilworth Wrestling K-8 Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2003 from 6:30pm - 9:30pm at the Galloping Hill Inn at Five Points in Union, N.J. The cost is $25 per adult to attend, but there is no charge for wrestlers and managers to attend. No one will be admitted without having submitted a completed form and payment by Friday, April 4, 2003.

Kenilworth Qualifies 23 Wrestlers for NJ Kids States  
Kenilworth qualified 23 of its K-9 wrestlers for the 2003 NJ Kids State Wrestling Tournament. The qualifiers were held at locations throughout the state over the past 2 months, including Randolph (1 qualified), Toms River (3 qualified), Union (11 qualified), North Hunterdon (1 qualified) and Edison (7 qualified). The 2003 State Tournament will be held over 2 weekends: Saturday, March 22 (Bantams/Freshman Intermediates) - Sunday, March 23 (Midgets) at Union HS and Saturday, March 29 (Juniors) - Sunday, March 30 (Intermediates) at Lakewood HS. Brearley Senior Dan Zika Advances to States at 189
Brearley Senior Dan Zika is headed to Atlantic City on Friday, Mar 14, for the first round of the State Tournament. Zika excelled at 189 in the Region 3 Tournament, held at Union HS on Fri-Sat, March 7-8, defeating Latona of Boonton in the Semi-Finals and competing against Shane Mallory of New Providence in the Finals. Zika fell to Mallory, 5-8, but will advance having taken 2nd place overall in Region 3. Zika was Brearley's only finalist in this tournament. Brearley's other eligible wrestler, Senior Mike Rothery, was unable to compete in Saturday's wrestlebacks due to an injury sustained during his bout against Kakas of North Plainfield in the Quarterfinals held Friday night.
 Recreation Wrestlers Reign Over CJL Tournament
Kenilworth Recreation Wrestlers conquered the 2003 Central Jersey League Tournament with their outstanding first place team finish. The annual tournament was hosted by South Plainfield on Sunday, March 2. Second place went to South Plainfield Recreation who trailed Kenilworth by 22 points.
Six Brearley Wrestlers Place in Top 4 at District 10 Tournament
The Brearley Bear Wrestlers fared well at the District 10 Tournament held Fri-Sat, Feb 28-Mar 1, at Millburn High School. Seniors Mike Rothery (26-3) and Dan Zika (22-4), wrestling at 215 and 189 respectively, took first place in the tournament to become District 10 Champions. Zika's 6-3 win, against Anthony Greene of Columbia, led him to his second consecutive District 10 Championship. Rothery pinned Andy Bowsher of Columbia in 4:37. Zika and Rothery will advance to the Region 3 Tournament beginning Friday, Mar 7, at Union High School. Other prominent Brearley wrestlers included Jon Rego (23-10), who took second place at 145 after losing to top-seeded William Snell of Columbia, and Dom Olsen (21-11), who took third place at 125 by pinning Terrence Dodson of Irvington in a mere 36 seconds. Taking Fourth place were Joe Rodriguez at 135 and Joe Kahoonei at 160. The Brearley team finished 4th overall with 123 points.(Stats taken from the 3/06/2003 edition of The Leader.)

9 of 13 Wrestlers Qualifying for SJWA Finals Tournament Place in Top 4
Kenilworth qualified 13 of its K-8 wrestlers to participate in the South Jersey Wrestling Association (SJWA) Finals Tournament. The SJWA Finals were scheduled to be held in Williamstown, NJ on Sunday, Feb. 16, but were postponed due to the inclement weather and took place on Sunday, Feb. 23. The SJWA Finals is one of NJ's premier annual youth wrestling tournaments and 9 of the 13 Kenilworth wrestlers that qualified placed in the top four positions. Below are the qualifying wrestlers, their division/weight class, place in the qualifying tournament and place in the finals.

Brearley Bears Defeat New Providence in Sectional Quarterfinals
In the North Jersey, Section II, Group I Sectional competition held at Roselle Park High School on Thursday, Feb. 20, the Brearley Bears were trailing New Providence by 15 points going into the final 3 bouts of the Quarterfinals. The Bears wrestled hard to win all 3 of these last matches to tie New Providence, 34-34, and were then declared the winner due to criteria; Brearley had 4 pins compared to New Providence's 2. Assisting in this important win was a pin in the last match by Brearley's Conor Shannon causing the tied score. Brearley lost to top-ranked Roselle Park in the Semi-Finals.

Kenilworth CJL-A Wrestlers End South Plainfield's 4-Year Legacy
On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Kenilworth CJL-A (Blue) Rec Team defeated the South Plainfield Rec Team, 44-15. Kenilworth's impressive win in this highly anticipated match ended South Plainfield's 4-year streak of having no losses in dual meets. The two teams met last year in an extremely competitive match, only to end with a tied score. While this year's rematch ended South Plainfield's unbeaten legacy, it proved that the Kenilworth Bears have what it takes to continue their own winning tradition of 2-years of dual meets with no losses.

 Middle School Team Takes Berkeley Heights Tournament
With a total team score of 134 points, David Brearley Middle School Team defeated 7 other teams to take first place at Berkeley Heights PAL Wrestling Tournament. The tournament was held on Sunday, Feb. 2. The Brearley Bruins defeated teams including Roselle Park (2nd - 64 points), Berkeley Heights (3rd - 62 points), Nutley and Clark (tied for 4th - 49 points).

Rec Wrestlers Overpower the Competition at Blairstown Tournament
On Saturday, Jan 25, the Kenilworth Recreation Wrestlers, aged 12 & under, defeated 10 other NJ teams to win the Blairstown Invitational Tournament with a phenomenal team score of 279. Kenilworth had 23 wrestlers place in the Top Four positions. The other participating teams were Sparta, Belvedere, Blairstown Red, Blairstown White, Voorhees, Bridgewater/Raritan, Pohatcong, Greenwich, Branchville and Hackettstown, who finished second place with a mere 130 points.

David Brearley Bruins Middle School Team Excels at Team Duals
Kenilworth's Middle School Team hosted the First Annual David Brearley M.S. Duals on Saturday, Jan. 18. Participating teams were Linden, Pt. Pleasant Boro, Middlesex, Dover, Somerville, Jackson, New Providence & Kenilworth. The Brearley Bruins topped Somerville 64-12 and Dover 69-18 prior to falling to Jackson in the Finals 32-40. Third Place went to Middlesex with a 59-24 win over Dover.

Both K-6 CJL Rec Teams Open Season with Victories
CJL Blue Team dominates Roselle Park 64-3 and Gold Team conquers North Plainfield 42-35.

K-8 Rec Team Takes First Place at Robbinsville  K-8 Rec Takes First in Robbinsville Tourney

On Sunday, Dec. 15, the Kenilworth Wrestling K-8 Rec Team won first place in the Robbinsville Dual Meet Team Tournament. After convincing wins over Howell & St. Peters, Kenilworth battled Jackson in the Finals to win 50-49. Other participating teams included Flemington, Millstone, Robbinsville & Lacey.
