BEARS DOMINATE DISTRICT X EN ROUTE TO TITLE

Sean Kane

Kenny Knapp

On a weekend where some wrestlers' seasons gladly come to an end and others are just beginning, the Bears closed the book on a stellar team season and started their march through the toughest high tournament in the state as individuals. The Bears advanced a school record eight wrestlers to the district finals and once again bested long time rival, Roselle Park, for the District 10 team title. Freshman Kenny Knapp won the 103lb title with a pin over Seton Hall Prep's Chris Puorro. Sophomore Jesse Boyden looked slick in his final, winning the 215lb title by fall over Max Philador of Irvington. Other District 10 finalists advancing to the Region tournament were freshmen Joe Lospinoso (119), Sean Kane (125) and Travis Dilts (171), sophomore Hany Elshiek (160), Junior Anthony Evans (152) and Senior Connor Shannon (189). Placing third and advancing were Dan Conroy (112), Joe Mraz (130), and Matt Loffa (135). Also garnering top honors was the Bear's head coach, named District 10 Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Coach Luciani and all the Bears on a great season.

NEW: BEARS TRAVEL TO RITACCO AND GET WAKE UP CALL
Fresh off the Bears dominating win over Roselle Park in the Group I Central Jersey Sectional Finals, the Bears traveled down to Toms River to take on perennial powerhouse Paulsboro High School in the Group I State semifinals. Coming into this year's contest, the Red Raiders had won 23 of 24 Group I state titles, most of which by the largest of margins. 2006 would prove to be no different. The Red Raiders beat the Bears at every turn, knocking off usual point men Jesse Boyden 11-1, Kenny Knapp 1-0 and Joe Lospinoso 6-2 en route to a 43-13 victory. At times, the match seemed as though the Bears were dying a slow death, losing 10 of the 14 bouts by regular or major decision. Hasbrouck Heights/ Woodridge would choose a much different route in the finals, dropping a 59-10 decision to Paulsboro in which seven matches ended by pin fall. At the end of the day, it was a good experience for our young Bears and a great reminder that more work needs to be done.

BEARS WIN FIRST EVER SECTIONAL CROWN WITH WIN OVER PARK!
Brearley defeated Roselle Park 39-20 to capture its first-ever sectional championship. Brearley entered the finals with a school-record 26-2 mark that included an 18-match winning streak. "Roselle Park has a great program that has done things the right way", Brearley head coach Brian Luciani said. Now, after many years of building a program up from the recreation level, Brearley can say the same thing about its team. "Our recreation program is huge", Luciani said. "After the high school re-opened, we looked at a program like Roselle Park and wanted to emulate them. We saw all the success they had with their recreation program and knew that we had to start there ourselves."

Like the Bear's triumph in January, Brearley won nine of the 14 bouts. None were bigger than the victory recorded by junior Eric DuBeau at heavyweight. DuBeau was pinned by Roselle Park senior Anthony Weiland in 1:51 in the January match. On this night though, he held a surprising 2-1 lead heading into the third period. The Brearley faithful in attendance began chanting "Eric, Eric" in the third period when DuBeau was holding on to his slim lead. He increased it to 3-1 and then had the good fortune to be able to pin Weiland with just 11 seconds remaining. "When he got the pin, it was a moment that felt like time stopped, the crowd was so loud." Luciani said. DuBeau's pin was one of four Brearley wins in a row that netted the team 18 points. Roselle Park was able to stop the bleeding momentarily when Craig Montgomery pinned Dan Conroy but Joe Lospinoso and Sean Kane closed out the contest with pins of their own.

BEARS WIN THREE OF FOUR IN TURKEY DAY DUALS
This past weekend, a team of Kenilworth wrestlers ventured outside the state for the Quakertown PA Turkey Day Duals. In the absence of coach Calabria, Coach Jeans stepped in to lead the Bears against some of Pennsylvania's best. The day started out with a hard fought 60-48 win over Upper Perkomin. The Bears were down 24-6 early but won 9 of the next 11 to take the lead for good. Dillion Geoghegan capped off the run with a pin at 115. The Bears followed up their triumph with a blow-out win over Penn Ridge 72-35. The Bears again found themselves down 25-0 early against Penn Ridge before winning 13 straight matches. The run was highlighted by a thrilling 3-1 overtime win by Joe Casamento. Next up for the Bears was a forfeit laden Notre Dame team. With the win secured early on, the most meaningful match occurred at 105 with Devon Geoghegan winning by fall over close competitor Brandon Hull.

However, after the strong 3-0 start, the tide turned in the last match as host team Quakertown took the Bears behind the proverbial woodshed on its way to a 74-30 win. Again the Bears limped out of the gate and found themselves down 38-0. They would rally once again winning the next 5 matches to cut the lead to 38-27 but a less than inspiring effort from the Bears upper weights doomed their effort as Quakertown ran off victories in six of the next seven matches. Team standouts Dan Ries 95lbs and Nick Lospinoso 80lbs were both impressive in victory, finishing the day at a combined 8-0 including seven pins and a tech fall. Congrats to all Bear wrestlers and good luck on the season as we ALL have some work to do.
